Budtender of the Month: Gary Reed

October 05, 2017 | PacerStacktrain

Each month, the Leaf crew meets to select one special budtender that stands out above the rest! Tell us who you think should be the next Budtender of the Month and why they deserve it!

First Cannabis experience?

When I was 17, I smoked some OG Kush with my friend. We had a blunt and watched Napoleon Dynamite. We were eating some Starburst candies at the time. After what felt like 30 minutes I started asking myself “Am I not high? Am I high? Is she high? This isn’t working.” Then my friend looked over and said “Are going to keep playing with the candy wrapper or eat it?” I looked down and realized hadn’t opened my candy and that I am, indeed, super high. It was everything! Euphoric, relaxing and liberating all at the same time. I haven’t looked back since.

How long have you been in the Cannabis industry and what is your favorite part of the job?

I have been a budtender since December of 2015 . I love every aspect of the job, from meeting the growers who pour their heart and soul into their products, to the amazing customers that come to our shop. I feel like this is my calling, my way to help people. Getting to help, interacting with, and the connection we make together is fulfilling. Helping someone feel more confident about their purchases and to see them leave in a better mood literally motivates me to do this each and every day! That, and my team here at Moss Crossing. Being surrounded by these awesome people keeps me waking up excited to go to work!

What’s your favorite method of consumption?

As this industry has grown by leaps and bounds - the methods to consume have grown and changed with it. I am on the go a lot, so vape cartridges are really good for me. I love to the taste of oil with heavy terpene content. But, at the end of the day, nothing beats a good old joint of some top shelf flower. Something about the process of breaking down your favorite buds and rolling them is therapeutic. That will always be my favorite method of consumption.

What are some of your favorite Cannabis strains and effects?

I love the flavor profile of OG Kush and almost anything that is a phenotype of or crossed with it. I love all effects - sativa- or indica-dominant strains, it doesn’t matter. With OG Kush being a hybrid, I feel like I get the best of both worlds. I love a really good body high with a stimulating sense of euphoria. It’s like the saying, “feet on the ground, head in the clouds.” Myrcene is definitely one of my favorite terps! The couchlock feel is one of my favorite effects, especially after a long day.

How do you help customers find the best Cannabis or products for them?

Listening and communication. We all use Cannabis for many different reasons and each one of us has different endocannabinoid system. So, I try to find out when or how they plan to consume and what they want from that experience. Any feedback is important for me to hear – and also what they may have tried in the past. When experimenting with Cannabis I try to make sure customers know that what one person experiences from a strain can be different from what another person gets from the same strain. I think that’s the fun part. The journey is finding out that it’s not one-size-fits-all, and that the combination of multiple strains for different times and places is important.

What makes your shop’s approach different?

I feel it’s in our name: Moss Crossing. Moss being green like our favorite flower and representation of the Pacific Northwest. Crossing being a place for people of all walks of life to get together and converse about experiences of Cannabis and the role it plays in our lives. My team is very passionate about Cannabis. An even more passionate about helping people! We want people to feel comfortable talking or asking questions about Cannabis. Our slogan is “The friendliest joint in town.” Since we opened we have developed real bonds with our customers and the community. Our goal is to bring awareness about Cannabis and how it’s beneficial compared to what we, and generations before us, were taught. These are important times in the history of Cannabis and we want to be some of the pioneers that bring in this new age.

Hobbies/interests outside of Cannabis?

My first love is basketball. I play twice a week. Going to the movies is a big hobby for me. I also practice Wing Chun [Chinese martial art].  My friends are so important to me. Since moving to Oregon, I’ve enjoyed exploring this great state. There are so many natural features and trails. My favorite hobby is taking road trips to Crater Lake with homies and some of his hand rolled Moss blunts with custom wood tips for the adventure!
